Anglo-Nepalese War — Nepal vs. British East India Company
एंग्लो-नेपाल युद्ध — नेपाल बनाम ब्रिटिश ईस्ट इन्डिया कम्पनी
What happened
Nepal fought Britain's East India Company in a two-year war. Nepal's soldiers fought bravely but the British had more guns and soldiers. Nepal had to sign a peace treaty giving up large parts of its territory. But Nepal was never made a British colony — it kept its independence, which was very unusual in South Asia.
Full Verified Record
The Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–1816) was fought between the Kingdom of Nepal and the British East India Company. Triggered by border disputes along the Terai and Nepal's expansion into territories the Company claimed, the war resulted in British forces defeating Nepali armies on multiple fronts despite fierce resistance. Nepalese commanders like Amar Singh Thapa and Bhakti Thapa became national heroes. The war ended with the Treaty of Sugauli in 1816. Nepal lost approximately one-third of its territory — Sikkim, Kumaon, Garhwal, and strips of the Terai — and agreed to permit a British Resident in Kathmandu. However, Nepal was never colonised, a distinction it holds to this day.
Why it mattered
The war shaped Nepal's borders for the next 200 years. Nepal was one of the only states in South Asia to maintain independence from British colonialism. The military performance of Nepali soldiers so impressed the British that they began recruiting Gurkha soldiers — a practice that continues today. The territorial losses remain politically sensitive: the Kalapani dispute (Sugauli border) is still unresolved as of 2026.
Who was affected
Hundreds of thousands of people in Kumaon, Garhwal, and Sikkim who passed from Nepali to British rule. The Terai border communities. Nepal's military. The British East India Company's administration of northern India.
