Nepal Joins the United Nations
नेपाल संयुक्त राष्ट्रसंघको सदस्य बन्यो
What happened
In 1955, Nepal officially joined the United Nations — the big international organisation that almost every country in the world belongs to. This gave Nepal a voice in world affairs and access to help from UN organisations for schools, hospitals, and development.
Full Verified Record
Nepal was admitted to the United Nations on 14 December 1955 as one of the 16 new members admitted that day in a package resolution. Nepal's admission was significant: the 1923 treaty with Britain had recognised Nepal as fully sovereign but Nepal's international presence remained minimal. UN membership gave Nepal a seat at the global table, access to UN development agencies (later UNDP, UNICEF, WHO programmes that would become critical), and a framework for foreign aid. Nepal's first permanent representative to the UN established Nepal's tradition of active UN participation, including contributions to UN peacekeeping forces — which Nepal would become a significant contributor to over subsequent decades.

Why it mattered
UN membership anchored Nepal in the international system and opened access to multilateral development funding that would significantly shape Nepal's development trajectory. Nepal later became a major contributor to UN peacekeeping forces — an important source of foreign exchange and military experience.
Who was affected
Nepal's diplomatic service. Future recipients of UN development programmes. Nepali peacekeeping soldiers (eventually thousands). Nepal's international standing and foreign aid access.
